ORCHARD

ORCHARD

Over 600 trees & 30 varieties

In 2004 we established an apple orchard on our Kangaroo Island farm with the intention of producing our own ciders. The orchards are gently sloping, north-facing on sandy loam over permeable clay. Over the years we have gradually improved the soils by the incorporation of organic matter in the form of mulches and inter-row green manure crops.

We currently grow over thirty varieties, mainly Old English cider apples.

Some of the cider varieties include Yarlington Mill, Kingston Black, Somerset Red Streak, Blenheim Orange, Improved Fox Whelp and King David. These have varying amounts of sugar, acid and tannin.

We also grow a selection of dessert apples, which are used for juice and cider making. These include Cox’s Orange Pippin, Gala, Jonathon and Bramley's Seedling.

Our orchard is protected from Kangaroos and most Possums by an electric fence. However Echidnas, Goannas and Snakes are common visitors.

All trees available from Yalca Fruit Trees yalcafruittrees.com.au
